Partners for Affordable Housing (Partners) announces ticket sales for two fundraiser opportunities.
“Fire Up the Smoker” raffle tickets are $10 and may be purchased from any staff or board member, or at Partners’ main office at 151 Good Counsel Drive. Grand prize, valued at $1500, includes a Green Mountain Smoker, donated by Lloyd Lumber Company, as well as accessories, meats, rubs and sauces. Drawing takes place December 20, 2019 at 12:00 PM live on Partners’ Facebook page. Must be at least 18 to purchase one of the 500 available tickets.
Secondly, Battle of the Bowls—a chili cook-off—marks the beginning of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (HHAW), a nationwide event designed to educate the public, draw attention to the problem of poverty, and build up the base of volunteers and supporters for local anti-poverty agencies. HHAW takes place nationwide each year the week prior to Thanksgiving.
“Attendees can expect a flight of chili samples, cornbread, dessert, musical entertainment, cash bar and silent auction for the ticket price of $12,” said Kirsten Becker, Communications Manager. “In the second year of Battle of the Bowls, we have a dozen area restaurants, caterers and food trucks providing chili samples. Community members are invited to participate in the judging process by voting for their favorite. It will be a fun, family-friendly event.”
Battle of the Bowls takes place Monday, November 18, from 5:00 – 7:30pm at Snell Motors, 1900 Madison Ave. Proceeds will support area homeless shelters – the Theresa House and Welcome Inn in Mankato, and Union Street Place in St. Peter. Tickets are available at the door or online by visiting www.partnersforhousing.org/battle-of-the-bowls. Cost is $12 for adults, which includes five 2-oz. samples of their choice. Children’s tickets are $5 and include a single bowl of chili or macaroni and cheese. Cornbread, non-alcoholic beverages and desserts are provided at no extra cost; additional bowls of chili will be available for purchase at the event. Adult tickets purchased online prior to November 18 will receive a $2 discount. Any businesses interested in participating in the chili competition or in donating silent auction items may contact Partners directly.
“We continue to see a large need for our emergency shelter, as well as transitional housing options, due to the lack of what is considered affordable housing by the state.” said Jen Theneman, Executive Director.
“Our shelters provide safe respite for these families, and through our programming, clients improve self-sufficiency and confidence, overcome hurdles that prevent them from being housed, and are connected to partner agencies in the community, all of which helps them gain and maintain housing stability.”
Partners for Affordable Housing is a non-profit organization which supports people experiencing homelessness and associated barriers in the Greater Mankato Area, through its three emergency shelters in Mankato and St. Peter, transitional housing programs, and permanent housing at below-market rent. All programs are subsidized, in part, by grants, fundraising events, and donations from community members.
