Partners for Affordable Housing Board of Directors are pleased to announce that Deb Newman has joined the organization as its new Executive Director. This position was recently vacated by the retiring Carrol Meyers-Dobler.
Partners for Affordable Housing provides shelter for homeless families and individuals and helps them secure stable, affordable housing. The organization fills a unique need in the community by providing shelter for single women, families and men as part of a family unit. Partners for Affordable Housing have two shelters; the Welcome Inn and Theresa House and several affordable housing apartment complexes and homes throughout the community.
Deb joins the organization with over 20 years of business experience with companies such as Target, Caterpillar, and Taylor Corporation; most recently serving in the capacity of Vice President of Human Resources. Throughout her career, Deb brings a strong history of community service including serving on the Board of Directors for the Greater Mankato Area United Way and Junior Achievement organizations. She participated on several Community Impact teams for the United Way focusing on the needs within the Greater Mankato area including the Nurturing Children and Youth and Emergency Services boards. Deb also served as Co-Chair for the inaugural Women with Heart event. In 2012, she was the recipient of the United Way’s Volunteer of the Year. Deb currently serves on the YMCA’s Personnel committee.
With a belief that mission is served by strong teams and the community as a whole, Deb will focus her efforts on building its volunteer and donor networks. “I’m excited about the opportunity to continue to build upon an organization that is able to give back to the community and provide assistance to those in need,” said Newman. “I look forward to working with the Board of Directors in helping move our mission forward and help as many people as we can.”
All funds raised play a part in the shelter guests’ recovery from homelessness. With these dollars, Partners for Affordable Housing are able to offer a safe and nurturing respite to those in our community who suddenly find themselves with no other place to go. Additionally, Partners transitional housing program provides assistance to allow individuals to properly house themselves and their families in comfort and safety without disproportionately depleting the already stretched finances of the poor and homeless.
“While much of Mankato is seeing a boom in industry and jobs – poverty in our area continues to be a very real issue. Each month, Partners hears from an average of 40 families seeking shelter or affordable housing options,” said Mark Piepho, Board President.
“The face of homelessness has changed. The individuals we serve are women, children and intact families. For every one person we serve today, we often have to turn away five. I’m looking forward to working with the board of directors and community leaders about the prospect of bringing a larger shelter to our community. With these types of endeavors, we will need help from the giving people of Mankato,” said Newman.
